JAMMU: Close on the heels of a custodial death within the premises of a police station here last week, policemen beat to death a 40-year-old chowkidar near village Mishriwala in the outskirts of the city here on Friday. According to reports Kewal Ram 40, a father of three minor children and a resident of Gurah Keran was employed as a chowkidar by the Jammu and Kashmir Housing Corporation Limited in Mishriwala.
Policemen from the police station at Gharota nearby for the last few days had been doing the rounds of the area apparently keeping an eye on suspected encroachments. At around 12.30 pm, an assistant sub-inspector Lal Chand accompanied by two constables landed at the spot and started questioning Kewal Ram and another chowkidar Bhola.
The policeman asked the chowkidars to leave the spot which they refused. The cops beat up the two and while Bhola managed to escape from the spot, Kewal fell down and was then further beaten up. When the chowkidar collapsed, the panicky policemen fled from the spot. Kewal Ram was taken home by some passersby and family members shifted him to government hospital at Sarwal. He kept complaining about pain in the chest and back and doctors administered some treatment but with no signs of improvement family members shifted him to the government medical college hospital where he collapsed and died at 4.30 pm.
